Finalist of the competition for Logistics Deed of the Year 2011: city government of Tartu in cooperation with SEBE – updating the public transport service of Tartu.
Updating of the public transport service in Tartu was initiated by the city government of Tartu, the idea was implemented by the bus company SEBE. One of the goals was to offer citizens who use public transport more comfort and safety than previously as well as enthuse car drivers to opt for public transport services. The second goal is to use traffic solutions that are more environmentally friendly. In January 2011, SEBE started to use 51 new low-floor and uniformly designed inner city line buses, among which are the 5 first buses in Estonia that are powered by natural gas. All buses are equipped with electronic information screens. In the future, it will be possible to integrate them with a real-time bus stop infosystem. The repair system has also been renewed - bus repairs are fully organized by the sales representatives of bus manufacturers. This allows the operator to concentrate on offering the highest possible quality of transport service. The number of passengers using inner city lines during the first 10 months of 2011 has grown by 400 000 (ca 4%) and the ticket profit has increased by ca 7%. Passenger feedback has been very positive and the uniform bus design has made the city atmosphere more pleasant. Buses powered by natural gas have justified themselves by proving to be reliable and saving 10% in operational costs.
